Such a future looks inevitable and could even be considered the natural progression of evolution on Earth where humans cause the uptick in the exponential progression of brain power, via machines. Whether the AI will actively subjugate or exterminate or assimilate human beings, or just ignore and go about their own big thing is something we can only guess.

What we could guard against is a non-sentient algorithm far superior to our abilities inadvertently causing an extinction level event much like we seem to have overcome the threat of nuclear holocaust. AI singularity is just one of the many threats to humans.
